Clinical Observation of Pulmonary Resection in Chonnam Area of Korea

Abstract
|
|
|
Six hundred nineteen patients underwent the pulmonary resection in this area during the period between January, 1960 and May, 1971.
The etiologies of disease were as followings; 33.4% had non-tuberculosis pulmonary disease (bronchiectasis, 12.4%; carcinoma, 10..3%; lung abscess, 8.7 and. others, 1.9%)and 66. 6% had pulmonary tuberculosis.
The complications directly related to operation were 19% (non-tuberculous pulmonary disease, 17%; pulmonary tuberculosis, 20%). The major complications were wound infection (5. 1%), intrathoracic hemorrhage (3.0%), space problem (2.7%), empyema (1.9%) and B.P.F. (1.2%).
The mortality following operation for non-tuberculous pulmonary disease was 4%, for pulmonary tuberculosis was 3% and the total mortality was 3.4%. The causes of death were respiratory failure (57%), blood loss (14%), transfusion reaction (5%), and unknown (24%).
